Summer time is perfect for a trip to the beach. My favorite spot is a little unfinished beach just beside Horseback Beach in Westport, MA. Not only did this couple go with my favorite beach, they also incorporated their son, and family engagements are my favorite engagements!!
Planning Your Beach Engagement Photos
Timing
While quite a few things go into planning your beach engagement photos, the most important is time of day. All that sand is super bright. Combined with the sun reflecting off the water, the beach can make for a photographer’s nightmare! Going at sunrise or sunset is KEY to great engagement photos by the sea.
Location
Next, choose your beach! Will it be busy? Is there parking? Are there options for backgrounds aside from open ocean? All very important for a great, well rounded engagement session. As much as I love photoshop (sarcasm), I don’t want to edit out the hairy back guy lounging in the background of your photos. Secluded beaches are ideal. Some grass, dunes, or even a jetty can add variety to the stark contrast of sand and water.
What to Wear
PLEASE dress comfortably. Clothing should be light and summery. Don’t forget, if you won’t be wearing shoes, get a pedi (guys too)! For the men, khaki sorts and a polo or short sleeved button up is ideal. Wear a T-shirt underneath for sweat! Ladies, a cute summer dress and sandals would be perfect.
Time of Year
Most of you know my weekends from April to November are pretty packed, however, if you can get in your beach engagement photos during off season, you have a great chance of empty beach. May and September are perfect!

Horseback Beach in Westport, MA is so pretty! My favorite photos are of their son when he’s holding up his shorts from the waves. HA! So cute. Great job!

Yes! Great tips and ideas for a beach session! Horseback Beach in Westport, MA looks like a great beach for an engagement session since it looks so versatile and not overly crowded.
